Chapter 1190 dropped yesterday and it delivered one of the most emotionally charged and narratively significant chapters of the entire Final Saga. Gaban called Luffy disappointing to his face, proved that Imu can actually bleed, dragged them both into Elbaf's Underworld with a technique we have never seen before, and then lost his left arm below the elbow doing it.

And now we have another break before Chapter 1191 on August 23rd.

According to plot leaks posted on X by Pew, the chapter is titled "The Person Whose Death Would Make People Happy." It starts with Gaban coming to rescue Luffy from Imu. He taunts the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, saying it is disappointing that an injured old man has to come and save him.

The title is pointing directly at the nature of the Pirate King as a position. The Pirate King is not a beloved hero. The Pirate King is the person who climbed so high that every other person with ambition wants to be the one who brings them down. Gaban is telling Luffy something Roger understood and that Luffy's childlike optimism has not fully absorbed yet. To sit on that throne is to make yourself the most desirable target in the world. Whether you die celebrated or hunted, your death will make a lot of people happy. That is the weight of the dream Luffy has been chasing since chapter one.

Gaban Told Luffy Something Roger's Generation Has Always Known

Gaban tells Luffy: how disappointing, you need to be rescued by an injured old man. The Pirate King is someone whose death would make people happy, because everyone wants to sit on that throne. If you want to become the Pirate King... The sentence is cut off in the spoilers but the implication is clear. Gaban is not being cruel for cruelty's sake. He is delivering the same lesson that Roger, Whitebeard, and everyone who reached the top already understands. The higher you climb, the more people are waiting to see you fall. Luffy's genuine joyfulness has always been his greatest strength and his greatest vulnerability, and Gaban is poking directly at the vulnerability.

Gaban's Shinmon: Hassen Fukushu Is the First Attack That Hurts Imu

To fight Gaban, Imu draws a Japanese weapon called Honebami, also known as Bone Eater, and attacks him. Gaban unleashes his technique called Shinmon: Hassen, Fukushu. This technique allows him to destroy the ground, which leads him and Imu to fall into the Underworld. Gaban launches a massive Haki-powered axe attack while Imu attempts to defend with multiple weapons. The strike breaks through enough of Imu's defense to leave the hidden ruler bleeding from the head.

Imu bleeding from the head is not a small detail. Through the entirety of the battle against Luffy, including Gear 5 at full power, Imu was never damaged. Not once. Gaban, injured and fighting a man who has collected legendary weapons from 19 founding monarchs, draws blood on the first real exchange. That tells you exactly where Gaban sits in the power hierarchy, and it also tells you that the gap between current Luffy and where he needs to be to genuinely threaten Imu is still significant.

They Fall Into Elbaf's Underworld and the Fight Continues

Gaban's technique destroys the ground, which leads him and Imu to fall into the Underworld. The chapter ends with Gaban suffering a major injury. The spoilers reveal that he is lying on the ground. Moreover, Gaban's left arm has been cut from below the elbow. Luffy is shocked by seeing the state Gaban is in.

That gap is the narrative engine that drives Luffy's next power development.

There will be no new One Piece chapter on Sunday, August 16. Weekly Shonen Jump is taking its magazine-wide Obon holiday break. This is not an additional personal break from Eiichiro Oda. The Obon break is the Japanese Buddhist festival where families return home to honor ancestors, and the magazine consistently takes time off around it every year. Chapter 1191 is expected August 23, which means two weeks between 1190 and 1191.

The upside of waiting is that Chapter 1191 is going to pick up inside Elbaf's Underworld with Gaban versus Imu continuing and Luffy processing everything Gaban told him on the surface. The symbolic weight of the Pirate King's legacy, Roger's crew, and the Void Century all being confronted simultaneously in a literal underworld while Luffy watches is the kind of setup that Oda has been building toward for the entire Final Saga.
